Show Reviews.
Saturday April 21, 2007. - Moorestown Friends School
Okay so to be honest I didn't really see the band before Drive-Thru Pharmacy. I'm sure they were wonderful!
Drive-Thru Pharmacy-I never really see Drive-Thru that often, but it's always a fun experience when I do. They had some loyal fans show up to sing along and dance, which helped the rest of the crowd get into it. Good times of "a pirate's life for me" and "Zip- the what is it (what is it?!)."
Disciples of Groove-Next was Disciples of Groove. They were fun, definitely talented musicians and the crowd really liked them. One song was crazy, and included various parts of the theme song from James Bond, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from the Nutcracker, and other really random songs that they managed to put in there, but they actually worked really well together.
The Skautopsies-I had heard good things about the Skautopsies, but I feel like I missed them at the shows they've played. I'm so glad I got to see them at this show, because they really impressed me. Pretty tight group of high school musicians, playing ska punk, a couple reggae breakdowns, and a surf-ish song about Surf Nazis on the coast of California. They have a pretty talented horn section as their solos showed. Their cover of the Toasters' "Hard Band for Dead" was pretty nice, if a little sloppy, but nothing that some practice couldn't fix. Their rendition of the Specials' "Nite Club" was great, as well as a partial cover of Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight." I swear they didn't play all covers, those are just the only names of the songs I know because they didn't have a set list I could steal. Their original songs were fun and danceable, and I hope they play more shows!
Steadfast United-This was only Steadfast United's third show as a band, but you'd think it had been their hundredth. The stage looked much emptier compared with the Skautopsies' 8 (if I remember correctly) person line-up, but they filled the room with their sweet sweet music. I was afraid that most of the kids would leave after the Skautopsies, but most stuck around and came to the the stage as soon as Steadfast United started playing. What followed was a great set of soulful ska played by a group of awesome musicians just doing what they love to do. Lead singer Michael Ambrose completely owned the stage and got the crowd dancing and singing along. They opened with "Gimme Some Lovin" and followed with "Skinhead Moonstomp." Great guitar riffs and a steady bassline, as well as a good beat on drums and some smooth organ all combined to create a great band with covers that would have made the original musicians proud and origi
nal songs that got everybody dancing. I can't do adequate service to just how good and how much fun their entire set was, so I encourage everyone to go see them at their upcoming dates in April and May. It was great to see the whole crowd just dancing along to the band, and you can be sure that they'll provoke this same reaction and more from future crowds (assuming that crowd actually likes good music). Set list is as follows:
Gimme Some Lovin'
Skinhead Moonstomp
Whatcha
My Promise to You
Purse
Last Minute
Jerkin'
Old Flame
Flick
Midnite
So one of those songs wasn't played and Ambrose told me which one but I forget what he said, sorry!
